It was 2004 and my three (3) month-long vacation in Sydney, Australia was coming to an end and so was that year's run of the hugely popular Australian Idol. The last two contestants battling for the coveted title were Anthony Callea and Casey Donovan and Channel Ten made sure all of Australia was watching, (the Grand Finale remains the highest rated Idol show in the whole 5 series) by bringing the two finalists' Decider Battle in Sydney Opera House no less.
As with the rest of Australia, I watched Anthony's and Casey's final performances with cousin's family in their home in Blacktown, New South Wales, Australia.
After the show, most in that household thought Anthony Callea would be declared #Idol the next night.
But it was Casey Donovan who got all the checks in my list of what FACTORS that would sway the majority of the Australian TV audience to vote or not to vote for a particular artist - in this case the contestants in the most popular TV show in Australia at that time - #AustralianIdol. So, I went against the forecast of the majority in that household and said "It's going to be Casey."
I didn't get to watch the announcement of the winner the next night and it was only after several weeks that I was back I in Manila that I learned - pleasantly surprised is more like it -that she did win Australian Idol when my cousins in Sydney informed me over chat, or was it email? I couldn't even remember, haha!
Casey Donovan has a new single out now (Lonely) after what seems to be an eternity. But since 2004, I've always been convinced that she and her music will always be around. If there's one thing I observed about Australians, they deeply love their own and Casey is Australia's 'Idol.'
Box-Office Update : with total gross of AUSD 303,403* in its 1st week, 'I Am Heath Ledger' (documentary) lands in the top 10 box-office winners for week ending May 17, 2017. Australians still clearly love Heath!
